According to a 2010 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the chronic persistence of school bullying has led to student suicides across the country, including New Jersey — and NJ has the dubious honor of being one percentage point higher than the national median for bullying incidents. According to a 2009 study by the US Dept. of Justice & Education, 32% of students aged 12 – 18 reported being bullied and 25% of participant schools reported that bullying was a daily or weekly problem.
New Jersey’s legislature responded by passing the “Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act” in January 2011 to prevent, report, investigate and respond to incidents of harassment, intimidation and bullying of students that occur on and off school grounds. Gratefully, the state has recently agreed to fund this important new requirement.
